## Security: ISO 27001, SOC 2, and regional hosting

Put Drata and Vanta through the same three questions a security reviewer will ask: ISO 27001, SOC 2, and whether you can keep the tenancy in the US or the EU. Cells say **Not listed** when we could not find the claim on a public vendor page.

__Confirm certificates and residency on the vendor site or Trust Center before a formal review. Vanta: Vanta also runs an Australian region. Its help center says a regional tenant does not guarantee that all supporting services or subprocessors operate only in that region.__

During a live questionnaire, SMEs get pinged in Slack or Teams, not in a vendor portal. Here is what Drata and Vanta publish for those two connections.

## Subprocessors: the big three clouds, then the niche names

Compare Drata and Vanta on AWS, Azure and GCP first. Then scan for niche processors a reviewer should pause on: third-party LLMs, session replay, or support that leaves the region you elected.

__Cloud row lists the big three only. Niche names sit in the notes when the vendor published them.__

**Short answer:** Pick [Vanta](/vanta) if the compliance program already runs there and you want questionnaire drafts to use that same evidence, with a meter you can see: 25 questionnaires a year on Plus, 144 on Professional, 288 on Advanced Questionnaire Automation, plus a US region, an EU region hosted on AWS in Frankfurt, and an Australian region. Pick [Drata](/drata) if you want the same pairing of continuous monitoring and customer-facing assurance, with AI Questionnaire Assistance that can draw on policies synced from Drata, and you will budget the Assurance Platform separately from GRC. Assurance Foundation covers 10 questionnaires. Neither vendor publishes a dollar price, a free plan, or a trial. Drata was founded in 2020\. Vanta was founded in 2018\. This guide does not store a headquarters for either company, so none is stated.

Both products became questionnaire tools because security teams were answering the same spreadsheets from the same policies they already maintain for SOC 2 and ISO 27001\. The purchase is still a GRC platform. The questionnaire module is a line on that contract, with its own cap.

## Key takeaways

- **Two platforms at Drata, one metered module at Vanta:** Drata splits GRC and Assurance (trust center and questionnaires). Vanta lists Questionnaire Automation inside Plus and Professional and also sells it standalone.
- **Caps you can compare:** Drata Assurance Foundation includes 10 questionnaires. Vanta Plus includes 25 a year, Professional 144 a year, Advanced 288 a year.
- **No public dollars:** Drata offers “Get Personalized Pricing.” Vanta tells you to request a demo. Capterra reviewers have called Vanta expensive, in their words, and that is not a price list.
- **Regions:** Vanta names US, Frankfurt, and Australia, with a help-center caveat about subprocessors. Drata names AWS and Google Cloud and does not state regions on the security page used here.
- **A Drata strength:** questionnaire answers can draw on policies and controls synced from Drata, and Drata lists its own SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, and ISO 42001 in its trust center.
- **A Vanta strength:** imports from portals, spreadsheets, DOCX, and PDF, with export back in the original format, and a large integration catalog Vanta cites as 400+ tools.
- **Limitations:** a May 2026 Capterra reviewer wrote that Drata’s UX “can be clunky.” Vanta’s May 2026 G2 summary says reviewers found the interface disorganized and support slow in some areas. General RFPs are outside Drata’s stated tuning.

## What you are actually buying

Drata’s summary is compliance monitoring and evidence collection, plus, since SafeBase joined the portfolio in 2025, a trust center and an AI questionnaire assistant sold as a separately tiered Assurance Platform. The profile FAQ says Drata announced the SafeBase acquisition in February 2025, and that safebase.io now points at Drata. Named customers include Brex, Okta, GitLab, Fortinet, Instacart, UiPath, EAB, and Mural. The buyer is a security or GRC team automating SOC 2, ISO 27001, or a similar framework, who also answers customer security reviews.

That sync is the strength to concede even if you prefer Vanta’s region story. Questionnaire answers can draw on policies and controls synced from Drata, not only on a separate answer library someone retypes. AI Questionnaire Assistance drafts answers for experts to approve, edit, or reject. The trust center, from SafeBase, includes clickwrap NDAs and automated access approvals on the tiers that include it. A Chrome extension answers inside questionnaire portals. Slack can take notifications, answers, and uploads. Microsoft Teams is listed for notifications. The point of the design is one evidence set. If marketing updates a policy in the GRC tool, the questionnaire draft should be able to see it. Test that with a policy you change on purpose.

Vanta’s summary is a compliance-automation and trust platform whose Questionnaire Automation module drafts security-questionnaire answers from policies, documents, and past questionnaires, then routes them for review. Founded in 2018\. Named customers include GitHub, Duolingo, Intercom, Samsara, Atlassian, Ramp, Snowflake, Icelandair, Restaurant365, and SonarSource. The key features are an AI first pass from a knowledge base of past questionnaires and synced policies, import from third-party portals, spreadsheets, DOCX, and PDF, export back to the original format, assignment and comments, knowledge-base tags by product, region, and industry, and a Trust Center with gated documents, NDA collection, and an optional AI chatbot for buyers.

Vanta’s strength to concede is that round trip. Security teams lose hours reformatting an answer into the customer’s sheet. Export “back in the original format” is the sentence to test, not to applaud in the abstract. Tags by product, region, and industry matter when one company sells more than one product and a single global answer would be wrong. The Trust Center is how some reviews never become a spreadsheet. Deflection is a real outcome when buyers accept the documents you already published.

Neither tool is an RFP response suite. Drata’s profile FAQ says the assistant is tuned for security questions, and general RFPs sit outside that tuning. Vanta’s questionnaire pages describe security questionnaires. A proposal team writing a narrative technical volume, or a fund team answering an ILPA DDQ, is shopping in a different category. You can still buy Drata or Vanta for the audit and buy something else for the RFP. Pretending the questionnaire module covers every inbound document is how the cap surprises you in November.

## The meters, which are the only public numbers

Drata’s plans page, checked October 2026, does not list dollars. It lists shape.

GRC Platform Foundation covers up to 50 full-time employees and one pre-mapped framework. The frameworks named for that entry tier include SOC 2, ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials, HIPAA, or GDPR. Additional frameworks are add-ons. Advanced covers any available framework plus custom connections and tests. Enterprise adds Risk Management Pro, Compliance as Code Pro, and User Access Review. GRC plans include “Trust Center Standard” and “AI Questionnaire Assistance Standard.” The fuller trust center and questionnaire features are the Assurance Platform, with its own Foundation, Advanced, and Enterprise tiers. Assurance Foundation includes questionnaire assistance for 10 questionnaires. Additional questionnaires are an add-on. Word, PDF, and TXT support are listed from Advanced. Third-Party Risk Management is a separate product. There is no free plan and no trial. The button is “Get Personalized Pricing.”

Ten questionnaires on Assurance Foundation is a small number if you sell to enterprise buyers. It may be enough if the trust center deflects the rest. Count last year’s inbound security reviews before you treat Foundation as the plan. If you answered 40, you are buying the add-on or a higher Assurance tier, and the GRC Foundation’s 50-employee cap is a separate ceiling. A company of 80 people is not on GRC Foundation, whatever the questionnaire count is.

Vanta’s pricing page lists Essentials, Plus, Professional, and Enterprise, and says to request a demo for personalized pricing. Essentials includes one compliance framework, Vanta AI Agent, automated evidence collection, and a Trust Center. Questionnaire automation is an optional add-on on Essentials. Plus adds AI-powered Questionnaire Automation at 25 questionnaires a year, with an optional upgrade path toward 144\. Professional, marked most popular on the page, includes 144 questionnaires a year, an Advanced Trust Center, risk management, and advanced reporting. Enterprise is a custom package. Sold on its own, Questionnaire Automation covers 144 questionnaires a year. Advanced Questionnaire Automation covers 288 a year and adds custom tagging, approval workflows, and SCIM. Approval workflows sit in that Advanced tier, not in every plan. There is no free plan and no free trial.

Put the caps in one note for finance:

| | Drata | Vanta |
| ----------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------- |
| Public price | None. “Get Personalized Pricing.” | None. Demo for a personalized price. |
| Entry questionnaire allowance | 10 on Assurance Foundation | 25 a year on Plus, or an add-on on Essentials |
| Higher allowance | Add-on, or a higher Assurance tier | 144 on Professional or standalone, 288 on Advanced |
| Employee or framework gate | GRC Foundation: up to 50 FTEs and one framework | Essentials: one framework |
| Trial | None listed | None listed |

A team at 30 questionnaires a year is over Drata’s Foundation allowance and over Vanta’s Plus allowance, and inside Vanta’s Professional allowance of 144\. That is not a recommendation. It is the only arithmetic the public pages support. The dollars still come from two quotes for the same frameworks, the same employee count, and the same questionnaire volume.

## Trust centers and what the buyer sees

Drata’s Assurance story is the SafeBase product, announced as an acquisition in February 2025\. The trust center with clickwrap NDAs and automated access approvals is the customer-facing half. AI Questionnaire Assistance is the half your team still has to touch when a buyer will not accept the trust center alone. GRC’s “Standard” versions of those features are not the same SKU as Assurance. If a seller shows you a polished trust center, ask which tier is on the quote. A demo of Assurance Advanced is not evidence that GRC Foundation includes it.

Vanta’s Trust Center includes gated documents and NDA collection, and an optional AI chatbot for buyers. Professional calls out an Advanced Trust Center. The chatbot is optional. Ask what it is allowed to say, which documents it can reach, and whether a buyer can pull an answer that your questionnaire team would have rejected. A trust-center bot and a questionnaire drafter can share a knowledge base and still need different approval rules. The profile says questionnaire answers are routed for review. Apply the same expectation to anything a buyer can query without you in the room.

Both vendors are trying to stop the spreadsheet. The spreadsheet remains for the buyers who refuse the portal. That is why the import and export features exist. Vanta states the original-format export plainly. Drata states a Chrome extension for portals, and Word, PDF, and TXT support from Assurance Advanced. If your inbound mix is Excel, confirm Excel on the Drata tier you are buying. The fact file’s phrase is Word, PDF, and TXT from Advanced. Do not assume a workbook is covered because a PDF is covered.

## Evidence, Slack, and the stack around the audit

Drata’s integration list in the fact file includes AWS, Azure DevOps, BigQuery, Bitbucket, BambooHR, Asana, Cloudflare, Confluence, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Salesforce, HubSpot, DocuSign, Ironclad, Google Drive, and Microsoft Dynamics. The profile says Drata cites hundreds of tools for evidence collection. The strength is the monitoring fabric: the questionnaire is downstream of controls that are already connected. A gap in the connector list is a gap in evidence, which becomes a gap in the draft.

Vanta’s list includes AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, GitHub, Jira, Okta, Slack, Salesforce, HubSpot, DocuSign, and Ironclad. The profile says Vanta cites 400+ tools. Slack is where assignments, comments, and answering can happen. This guide’s Vanta collaboration record lists Slack and does not list Microsoft Teams. If your reviewers live in Teams, Drata has a notifications line for Teams and Vanta’s record here does not. Ask Vanta before you treat that absence as permanent, and do not write Teams into the requirements as if this page confirmed it.

ISO and SOC reports for the vendors themselves are not the same as the frameworks they help you earn. Drata’s trust center lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 27017, ISO 27018, ISO 42001, SOC 3, CSA STAR, HIPAA, GDPR, and CCPA. The profile’s ISO 27001 note says ISO 27001:2022\. Vanta’s security page supports SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, and the fact file also lists ISO 42001, HIPAA, GDPR, PCI DSS, and CCPA. Both companies will be asked for their own reports during your vendor review. Download them from the trust centers. A GRC vendor that cannot produce its own SOC report on time is a difficult story to tell your auditor.

## Regions and subprocessors

Vanta documents three regions. The US region is app.vanta.com. The EU region is AWS in Frankfurt, app.eu.vanta.com, announced on Vanta’s own EU data-centre page. An Australian region is also on the record. The help center, checked for this guide, says a regional tenant does not guarantee that all supporting services or subprocessors operate only in that region. Elect Frankfurt, then read the subprocessor list at trust.vanta.com, which the security page links and which renders client-side. The list in the DPA is the list that counts. AWS is the named infrastructure provider, including KMS and the Frankfurt site.

Drata says it is hosted on AWS and Google Cloud and publishes a named subprocessor list in its trust center. Hosting regions are not stated on the security page in this record. If residency is a pass-fail question, Vanta has given you a public sentence and a caveat, and Drata has given you clouds without a region. Ask Drata for the region in writing. Do not fill the blank with a guess because another GRC tool published Frankfurt.

## What reviewers wrote down

Drata, as of the dates on the profile: 4.7 out of 5 on G2 from 1,331 reviews (July 2026), 3.6 out of 5 on Gartner from 12 reviews (July 2026), and 4.8 out of 5 on Capterra from 6 reviews (October 2026). The G2 sample is large. The Gartner sample is 12 people and the score is 3.6, which is the number to show the committee beside the 4.7, not instead of it. Capterra’s six reviews include a sentence worth quoting. A reviewer in May 2026 wrote: “The UX can be clunky. Too many clicks to get where you need to go.” Another review, December 2025, is recorded in the fact file as trouble seeing auditor requests for additional evidence. Click-count and auditor-request visibility are demo tasks. Time a control owner finding an evidence request. If it is many clicks, the review was describing your Tuesday.

Vanta, as of the dates on the profile: 4.5 out of 5 on G2 from 2,721 reviews (October 2026), 4.4 out of 5 on Gartner from 71 reviews (July 2026), and 4.2 out of 5 on Capterra from 33 reviews (October 2026). The G2 sample is the largest in this pair. Capterra has two pricing sentences this guide stores as quotations: “I do think Vanta is very expensive” (May 2025) and “The pricing was too high” (October 2025). Those reviewers are not publishing Vanta’s rate card. They are telling you the quote felt high against whatever they compared it with. Bring your own comparison, which is Drata’s quote for the same scope, not a rumor. G2’s May 2026 review summary, as stored in the fact file, says reviewers found the user interface disorganized, the AI features overly relied upon, and customer support slow or lacking in some areas. “Overly relied upon” is a reason to keep the approve, edit, or reject step. A first pass that nobody checks is the failure mode that sentence is pointing at.

Sample size favors Vanta on G2 and on Gartner. It does not settle the questionnaire cap or the region. Read the reviews after you know which tier you would actually buy. A complaint about Advanced approvals is irrelevant if you will never buy Advanced. A complaint about price is relevant on every tier, because neither vendor prints the price.

## Known issues and limitations

### Drata

- **No public price, plan, or trial:** the [plans page](https://drata.com/plans) offers “Get Personalized Pricing” (checked October 2026).
- **Two ceilings on the entry tiers:** GRC Foundation covers up to 50 FTEs and one framework. Assurance Foundation covers 10 questionnaires. Fuller file support (Word, PDF, and TXT) is listed from Assurance Advanced.
- **Security questions are the tuned job:** the profile FAQ says AI Questionnaire Assistance is tuned for security questions. General RFPs sit outside that tuning.
- **UX, in a reviewer’s words:** a May 2026 [Capterra](https://www.capterra.com/p/218441/Drata/reviews/) review said, “The UX can be clunky. Too many clicks to get where you need to go.” A December 2025 review is recorded as difficulty seeing auditor evidence requests.
- **Region not stated:** the [security page](https://drata.com/security) names AWS and Google Cloud and does not state a hosting region in this record. Read the current subprocessor list in the [trust center](https://trust.drata.com/).

### Vanta

- **No public price, plan, or trial:** the [pricing page](https://www.vanta.com/pricing) says to request a demo for personalized pricing (checked October 2026).
- **The meter is the product:** 25 questionnaires a year on Plus, 144 on Professional, add-on on Essentials, 288 on [Advanced Questionnaire Automation](https://www.vanta.com/products/questionnaire-automation), where approval workflows, custom tagging, and SCIM sit.
- **Price, in reviewers’ words:** [Capterra](https://www.capterra.com/p/211459/Vanta/reviews/) includes “I do think Vanta is very expensive” (May 2025) and “The pricing was too high” (October 2025).
- **Interface and support, in G2’s summary:** the May 2026 summary on [G2](https://ai.g2.com/product/vanta) says reviewers found the user interface disorganized, the AI features overly relied upon, and customer support slow or lacking in some areas (checked October 2026).
- **A region is not a closed border:** the [help center](https://help.vanta.com/en/articles/14667543-vanta-eu-and-aus-regions-sign-in-integrations-and-data-residency) says a regional tenant does not guarantee that all supporting services or subprocessors stay in that region.

## Choose Drata when

- Policies and controls in Drata should be the source the questionnaire draft can see, and experts will approve, edit, or reject.
- You want the SafeBase trust center and you have identified which Assurance tier includes the version you were shown.
- Ten questionnaires on Foundation matches your volume, or you have priced the add-on because it does not.
- You are under 50 FTEs and one framework, or you already know you are buying above GRC Foundation.
- Slack needs to do more than notify: the plans page includes answering and uploads from Slack, and Teams notifications are enough for the people who will not open another tab.
- You will ask for the hosting region in writing, because the security page used here does not state one.
- ISO 42001 on Drata’s own trust center is a question your customers already ask.

## Choose Vanta when

- The evidence for SOC 2 or ISO 27001 is already in Vanta, and standing up a second library would be the expensive mistake.
- Your year fits a published meter: 25, 144, or 288 questionnaires, and you know whether approval workflows require the Advanced tier.
- Buyers send portals, spreadsheets, DOCX, and PDF, and you need the finished file back in the original format.
- Tags for product, region, and industry match how your answers actually differ.
- You need a US region, Frankfurt, or Australia named on a public page, and you will still read the subprocessor caveat.
- The G2 sample of 2,721 reviews as of October 2026 is the record your committee wants to see, including the May 2026 notes on interface and support.
- Slack is where assignments and comments should land.

## The RFP is a different row

Drata and Vanta belong on a compliance shortlist. They do not, on the records above, belong on a shortlist for general RFP drafting. When that second purchase is real, [AutoRFP.ai](/autorfp-ai) is the AI-native row in this guide for structured RFPs, security questionnaires, and DDQs, and it is also the row aimed at a compliance reviewer reading the draft. The profile connects to Drata and Vanta so the GRC system can stay the system of record for controls. List price is $899 a month for 24 projects a year or $1,299 a month for 50, billed annually, with unlimited users. G2 is 4.8 out of 5 from 60 reviews and Gartner is 4.8 out of 5 from 20 reviews, as of July 2026\. That is a much smaller review sample than either GRC platform. The fit to prove, in a two-week proof of concept, is the workbook your questionnaire module refuses: the general RFP Drata says it is not tuned for. Keep Drata or Vanta for the audit and the trust center. Add a response platform only when the cap and the tuning leave a job undone.

## Verdict

Drata and Vanta are the same category of decision. You are choosing where evidence lives, how a trust center deflects reviews, and how many questionnaires the contract includes before an add-on. Drata’s genuine strengths are the policy sync into the questionnaire, the breadth of its own trust-center attestations, and a Slack path that includes answering and uploads, with Assurance as a separate tier you must not confuse with GRC Foundation. Vanta’s genuine strengths are the original-format export, named regions including Frankfurt, a 400+ integration claim, and a questionnaire meter written as 25, 144, and 288.

The public prices do not exist. The reviewer comments about cost and clicks do. Get two quotes for the same frameworks and the same annual questionnaire count. Click through an auditor request in Drata. Export one ugly spreadsheet from Vanta. Read the subprocessor list after you pick a region. The platform whose tier names match what the demo showed is the one to take to security review.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Drata and Vanta?

Both are compliance-automation platforms with a trust center and an AI questionnaire module. Drata, founded in 2020, sells a GRC Platform and a separate Assurance Platform. Assurance is where the fuller trust center and AI Questionnaire Assistance live, and Foundation on that platform covers 10 questionnaires. Vanta, founded in 2018, meters Questionnaire Automation by plan: an add-on on Essentials, 25 questionnaires a year on Plus, and 144 on Professional.

How much do Drata and Vanta cost?

Neither publishes prices. Drata's plans page offers "Get Personalized Pricing" through sales, with no free plan or trial. Vanta's pricing page says to request a demo for personalized pricing, and it does not offer a free plan or trial. The figures you can compare in public are the questionnaire caps, not the dollars.

How many security questionnaires are included?

Drata's Assurance Foundation tier covers 10 questionnaires, with more as an add-on. GRC plans include a Standard tier of AI Questionnaire Assistance, and the fuller features sit on Assurance. Vanta lists 25 questionnaires a year on Plus and 144 on Professional. A standalone Questionnaire Automation product covers 144 a year, and the Advanced version covers 288, with approval workflows and custom tagging.

Does either tool replace an RFP platform?

No. Drata's own profile says AI Questionnaire Assistance is tuned for security questions. General RFPs sit outside that tuning. Vanta's questionnaire product imports portals, spreadsheets, DOCX, and PDF, then exports the original format. That is a security-review workflow. A scored narrative RFP or a multi-section DDQ for investors is a different system.

Where is data hosted?

Vanta documents a US region, an EU region on AWS in Frankfurt, and an Australian region. Its help center says a regional tenant does not guarantee that every supporting service stays in that region. Drata says it is hosted on AWS and Google Cloud. Hosting regions are not stated on the security page in this record.

Should I choose Drata or Vanta?

Choose Drata if you want questionnaire drafts drawn from Drata policies, a SafeBase-based trust center on the Assurance tiers, and you can map 10 questionnaires on Foundation against your real volume. Choose Vanta if the audit evidence already lives in Vanta, you need a named Frankfurt region, and your year fits 25, 144, or 288 questionnaires.
