## Security: ISO 27001, SOC 2, and regional hosting

Put SafeBase and Whistic through the same three questions a security reviewer will ask: ISO 27001, SOC 2, and whether you can keep the tenancy in the US or the EU. Cells say **Not listed** when we could not find the claim on a public vendor page.

__Confirm certificates and residency on the vendor site or Trust Center before a formal review. Whistic: Whistic names only US AWS regions. No EU hosting option is described on its security page.__

## Subprocessors: the big three clouds, then the niche names

Compare SafeBase and Whistic on AWS, Azure and GCP first. Then scan for niche processors a reviewer should pause on: third-party LLMs, session replay, or support that leaves the region you elected.

**Short answer:** Pick [SafeBase](/safebase) when the trust center should live with Drata. The acquisition was announced on February 11, 2025, safebase.io now points at Drata, and the trust center plus AI Questionnaire Assistance are the Assurance Platform (Foundation, Advanced, Enterprise), quote-only, with 10 AI questionnaires on Foundation. Pick [Whistic](/whistic) when you need both directions of a security review: assessing vendors and answering customers, with Smart Response citations, a confidence score and a rationale, a Trust Center you can list on Whistic’s exchange, and a free profile you can configure after a 25-minute onboarding session. Whistic is based in Utah and was founded in 2015\. SafeBase was founded in 2020.

SafeBase’s Chrome extension documentation names Whistic as one of the portals it can work inside, alongside OneTrust, ServiceNow and Coupa. That is a useful tell. Some buyers send work through Whistic. The company answering may still draft somewhere else. You can be a Whistic customer, a SafeBase customer, or a team that only meets Whistic because a customer insisted on it. This comparison is about buying the product, not about surviving someone else’s portal.

Checked October 2026 against Drata’s plans, SafeBase’s help center, and Whistic’s pricing, security and help pages.

## Key takeaways

- **Direction of the workflow:** SafeBase is built for the company being reviewed: publish documents behind an NDA, then draft the questionnaires that still arrive. Whistic covers that responder job and the buyer-side job (Assess, Vendor Monitoring and Compliance, with AI SOC 2 summaries).
- **Included AI volume:** Foundation includes 10 questionnaires at SafeBase, then an add-on. Whistic Core includes 5 Smart Responses. More are sold in increments of 50, and each generation counts as one use.
- **What you see on an answer:** SafeBase shows sources. Whistic shows document citations, a confidence score and a rationale, and can auto-accept high-confidence answers.
- **Free start:** SafeBase has none listed. Whistic has a free profile and a 25-minute onboarding session to configure a Trust Center. Paid automation is still a quote.
- **Certificates you can point at:** SafeBase relies on the Drata trust center (SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 42001, HIPAA, GDPR), and you should confirm the SafeBase product is in scope. Whistic publishes SOC 2 Type II (report period June 1, 2025 to May 31, 2026, available under NDA), ISO/IEC 27001:2022 (certified since 2023 by Mastermind Assurance, valid through May 2028), ISO/IEC 42001, and TX-RAMP Level 1.
- **Limitations:** SafeBase’s FAQ says the AI “is optimized to answer security-related questions and we cannot guarantee that it will perform well on general RFP questions.” Whistic’s help center says imports can hang on multi-tab files or files with instructions, and tells you to strip the file down to the questions. Completed answers export as XLSX.

## Publishing posture versus running a vendor-risk program

SafeBase’s who-it’s-for line is security and sales teams who would rather publish documents behind an NDA than answer every review by hand. Key features match that: a branded trust center, clickwrap NDAs, automated access approvals, AI drafts from the Knowledge Base and trust center content, file import, a Chrome extension, and Slack and Teams bots. Customers named on the record include Abnormal, OpenAI, Twilio, CrowdStrike and LinkedIn. Several of those names come from the acquisition announcement, so confirm them if a slide depends on a current logo.

The genuine strength is the shared source. Documents you publish also feed questionnaire answers, and each AI answer shows the source it used. Approved responses can go back into the Knowledge Base. Slack and Teams bots let an approver handle an access request or an assigned question without logging in. That is a real fit for a sales-assisted security review where the approver is not going to live in another admin console.

Whistic’s who-it’s-for line is wider: InfoSec and risk teams that assess their own vendors and also need a published trust center plus AI help on inbound questionnaires. The genuine strength to concede is that two-direction coverage. Core includes unlimited vendors and users, 25 assessments, 5 Smart Responses, 5 Assessment Copilot uses, 5 Vendor Insights uses and 1 Trust Center. Assess + adds a custom questionnaire builder with logic, pre-questionnaire workflows, intake forms and 125 additional assessments. Trust + keeps Core’s assessment capability and adds AI-powered Smart Response with a Knowledge Base, AI-powered Vendor Insights, full access to premium frameworks, and additional customizable Trust Center profiles. A library of 40+ standard questionnaires and frameworks is listed for self-assessment. If your Tuesday is “send a questionnaire to a new subprocessor” and your Wednesday is “answer the one a customer sent us,” Whistic is describing both days. SafeBase is describing Wednesday, plus the trust center that might have prevented the email.

Neither product is an RFP desk. Whistic’s record says no RFP response workflow is described on its pricing or product pages. SafeBase lists RFPs among questionnaire types and then limits the claim in the FAQ, quoted above. DDQ workflows are not marketed by either. A proposal team shopping for a response library is in the wrong aisle.

## How Smart Response and AIQA actually behave

SafeBase AIQA runs across a questionnaire and generates answers from documents, the Knowledge Base, Trust Center content, external websites, and policies and controls synced from Drata. People review and approve. The Sources area includes auto-generated Analyzed Facts. There is no confidence score in the description used here. Questions move from Ready For Review to Approved, can carry due dates, and show up in a My Questions view. A multi-stage approver chain is not described.

The model note is specific. Google Gemini via Vertex AI Agent Builder is the main model. Relevant snippets are passed in context only. Vellum is a third-party AI workflow tool in the pipeline. Confirm Vellum on the current subprocessor list and DPA. SafeBase says it does not train on customer data and that customers can opt out of generative AI. The hosting cloud for the main database is not named in the AI article. The full subprocessor list is now in the Drata trust center. That is a documentation gap to close in procurement, not a guess about where the disks are.

Whistic Smart Response answers a whole questionnaire from documents and past questionnaires in the Knowledge Base. The user accepts, rejects or edits each answer. The Trust Center product page says answers include document citations, confidence scores and rationale. Help content says you can manually approve or auto-accept high-confidence answers, and assign questions to teammates with deadlines. The Knowledge Base can be scoped by Trust Center for different product lines. That product-line scope matters if you sell more than one thing and the answers must not leak across them. SafeBase’s extension article has the mirror constraint: on a multi-product trust center, AI answers are limited to a single product.

Imports at Whistic are XLSX, PDF, CSV or DOCX. The help center says Smart Response may hang on files with multiple tabs or non-question content such as instructions, and tells you to strip the file down to the questions. Export of completed answers is XLSX. If your buyer wants their original macro workbook back, ask Whistic to show that file, not a clean single-tab extract. The documented export is XLSX.

SafeBase’s help center lists CSV, Excel, Word, PDF and TXT, and sheet-style exports in the original format. Drata’s plans page lists Word, PDF and TXT support from Advanced, so Foundation buyers should not assume those types are included because the help center mentions them. The Chrome extension cannot read portals that block it. Those need a manual upload. Portals named include OneTrust, Whistic, ServiceNow and Coupa.

## Trust centers, NDAs and the exchange

Whistic lets you publish a Trust Center to the Trust Center Exchange, with NDA and expiring links. Extra Trust Centers can be purchased. The free profile is a 25-minute onboarding session that grants access and helps configure a Trust Center. That is a genuine on-ramp SafeBase does not match: SafeBase’s plans page routes buyers to a demo and personalized pricing, and no trial is listed. The free Whistic profile is not the paid Smart Response product. Core’s 5 Smart Responses are a paid-package inclusion, still behind Request Pricing.

SafeBase Foundation includes a branded Trust Center, Knowledge Base, clickwrap NDAs, automated access approvals, up to 100 approved domains, Slack and Teams, the Chrome extension, and 10 AI questionnaires. Advanced adds configurable access expiration, DocuSign or Ironclad NDA integration, SCIM, Salesforce and HubSpot, and Google Drive document sync. Enterprise adds dashboards, Microsoft Dynamics, data warehouse sync, Microsoft Purview, and questionnaire upload via Salesforce or API. Clickwrap on the included tier, and a contract tool (DocuSign or Ironclad) from Advanced, is a clear packaging split. Whistic lists DocuSign on the Trust Center package and Slack for Trust Center sharing and assessment workflow. Salesforce, Jira and BitSight are named partner integrations, plus an API.

BitSight on Whistic’s partner list is a hint about the buyer-side product: outside-in ratings next to assessments. SafeBase’s integration list is responder-side and Drata-side: Slack, Teams, Salesforce, HubSpot, Dynamics, Jira, Ironclad, Google Drive, Drata, SSO, SCIM, webhooks, API, Microsoft Purview. If vendor monitoring is in the statement of work, Whistic’s Assess and Vendor Monitoring modules are the pages to read. SafeBase will not substitute for that program.

## Security pages you can hand to your own reviewer

Whistic names its hosting. Primary is AWS US-West, standby is AWS US-East. The security page describes no EU hosting option. ISO/IEC 27001:2022 has been certified since 2023 by Mastermind Assurance, certificate valid through May 2028\. Whistic is also certified to ISO/IEC 42001 for its AI management system. The SOC 2 Type II report period on the page is June 1, 2025 to May 31, 2026, available under NDA. TX-RAMP Level 1 is listed. The subprocessor list, dated August 25, 2026, has about 30 entries, all with a US corporate location, most of them sales, support and analytics tools. Amazon Web Services is infrastructure. Anthropic is listed as business operations automation. Whistic says the AI providers in its stack appear on this list, and Anthropic is the only model provider named. Confirm which provider processes questionnaire content. Google and Salesforce are listed for customer support.

SafeBase’s certificate story is Drata’s. trust.safebase.io redirects to trust.drata.com with a SafeBase product filter. Listed items include SOC 2 Type II, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, ISO 42001, HIPAA and GDPR. The vendor notes mark those as medium confidence until you confirm the SafeBase environment is in the report. Ask. Gemini and Vellum are the names on the answer path from the technical article, which is a different list from Whistic’s Anthropic line. Your security reviewer will want both the certificate scope and the model subprocessors, not one or the other.

Neither vendor, in these records, offers an EU region you can elect. If a European customer requires EU residency for the questionnaire text you upload about your own company, both conversations need a direct question, and Whistic has already answered “US AWS regions” on its security page.

## Ratings and named customers

Whistic is at 4.5 out of 5 on G2 from 53 reviews, as of July 2026\. SafeBase is at 4.7 out of 5 on Capterra from 3 reviews, as of October 2026\. Fifty-three reviews is still a modest sample. Three is a thinner one. Use the counts when someone treats the higher score as the larger fact. No G2 figure for SafeBase is in the vendor record.

Whistic’s homepage names a long customer list. The vendor record includes Airbnb, Mastercard, Rippling, Uber, Spotify and Peloton. The facts file also records Google, Amazon, Genentech, Philips, NBCUniversal, HelloFresh, Sophos, McKesson, Danone, WeWork and Crocs, all marked high confidence from whistic.com. That is a wide set of industries for a trust and third-party risk product. It supports the “both directions” story: these are companies that assess suppliers and get assessed. It does not, by itself, say Smart Response is why they bought.

A team answering four customer questionnaires a month uses Foundation’s 10 before the end of the quarter (four a month is twelve in three months) and uses Core’s 5 early in the second month, because each Smart Response run counts as one use. Price the add-on (SafeBase) or the blocks of 50 (Whistic) in the first call. The base package is not the year.

## Known issues and limitations

### SafeBase

- **Sold only through Drata:** [plans](https://drata.com/plans) (checked October 2026) are quote-only, with no free plan or trial. safebase.io/plans redirects there.
- **Ten questionnaires on Foundation:** more are an add-on. Word, PDF and TXT, Salesforce and HubSpot start on Advanced, per the same page.
- **Their FAQ on scope:** [AIQA FAQ](https://help.safebase.io/en/articles/16203223-ai-questionnaire-assistance-aiqa-faqs) (checked October 2026): the assistant “is optimized to answer security-related questions and we cannot guarantee that it will perform well on general RFP questions.”
- **Extension blocks and one product at a time:** [Chrome extension article](https://help.safebase.io/en/articles/16203217-ai-questionnaire-assistance-aiqa-chrome-extension) (checked October 2026).
- **Scope of Drata’s certificates:** confirm SafeBase on [trust.drata.com](https://trust.drata.com/?product=safebase) (checked October 2026).
- **Three public Capterra reviews** as of October 2026.

### Whistic

- **No public prices:** every package is Request Pricing, per [whistic.com/pricing](https://www.whistic.com/pricing) (checked October 2026). Core includes 5 Smart Responses. Extras come in increments of 50.
- **Builder and frameworks sit higher:** the custom questionnaire builder is Assess +. Full premium-framework access is Trust +. Additional Trust Centers and assessments are add-ons, per the same page.
- **Messy files:** the [Smart Response help article](https://whistichelp.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/17353625779863-Smart-Response) says imports may hang on multi-tab files or files with instructions, and completed answers export as XLSX (checked October 2026).
- **US hosting only:** AWS US-West primary and US-East standby, per the [security page](https://www.whistic.com/trust-security-privacy) (checked October 2026). No EU option is described.
- **Model provider to confirm:** Anthropic is the only model provider named on the [subprocessor list](https://www.whistic.com/sub-processors) dated August 25, 2026\. Confirm it is the one that sees questionnaire content.

## Choose SafeBase when

- Drata is the system of record for controls, and questionnaire answers should be able to use policies synced from it.
- The urgent job is a branded trust center with clickwrap NDAs, access approvals, and Slack or Teams bots for those approvals.
- You can budget Foundation’s 10 questionnaires or the add-on, and Advanced if you need Word, PDF, Salesforce or HubSpot.
- Source display on each answer is enough, and you do not require a confidence score in the product description.
- You want a written opt-out for generative AI, and you will confirm Gemini and Vellum on the DPA.
- You are not buying a vendor-assessment network. You are answering customers.

## Choose Whistic when

- The team both sends assessments and answers them, and you want that in one platform with unlimited vendors and users on Core.
- Citations, a confidence score and a rationale should be on the draft, with the option to auto-accept high-confidence answers.
- A free Trust Center profile, after a 25-minute onboarding session, is a useful first step before Request Pricing.
- You want ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 certificates you can read on Whistic’s own security page, plus SOC 2 under NDA and TX-RAMP Level 1.
- Standard frameworks (the 40+ library, and premium frameworks on Trust +) are part of how you assess vendors.
- US-only AWS hosting is acceptable, and you have priced Smart Responses in blocks of 50 if five included runs will not last the quarter.

## Verdict

SafeBase and Whistic both end a security review with a trust center and an AI draft a person can check. SafeBase’s genuine strengths are the shared content between published documents and answers, source display, Slack and Teams approvals, and the Drata sync if that platform is already in house. Whistic’s genuine strengths are coverage of both sides of the review, citations with confidence and rationale, a free profile, a published subprocessor list, and certificates dated on its own security page.

SafeBase will not run your vendor-risk program. Whistic’s included Smart Response count will not survive a busy month without more blocks. Pick by the job that fills the calendar, price the allowance in the first meeting, and upload the multi-tab workbook your worst customer actually sends.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SafeBase and Whistic?

SafeBase, founded in 2020 and now part of Drata, is a trust center with an AI questionnaire assistant sold as Drata's Assurance Platform. Whistic, founded in 2015 and based in Utah, is a third-party risk platform that also answers inbound questionnaires with Smart Response and publishes a Trust Center on its Trust Center Exchange.

How much do SafeBase and Whistic cost?

Neither publishes a dollar price. SafeBase plans redirect to Drata: Foundation includes 10 AI questionnaires, with more as an add-on, and there is no free plan or trial. Whistic packages (Core, Assess + and Trust +) go through Request Pricing. Core includes 5 Smart Responses. Extra Smart Responses are sold in increments of 50\. A free Whistic profile is offered separately.

Do the AI answers show sources?

SafeBase shows a Sources area for each answer, including Analyzed Facts. A confidence score is not described. Whistic says Smart Response answers include document citations, a confidence score and a rationale, and you can manually approve or auto-accept high-confidence answers.

Can they answer a questionnaire that arrives as a file?

Yes. SafeBase lists CSV, Excel, Word, PDF and TXT, with Word, PDF and TXT called out from the Advanced tier on Drata's plans, plus a Chrome extension for portals including Whistic. Whistic Smart Response imports XLSX, PDF, CSV or DOCX and exports completed answers as XLSX.

Is there a free way to start?

SafeBase lists no free plan and no trial. Whistic offers a free profile after a 25-minute onboarding session that helps configure a Trust Center. Paid packages are still quoted.

Who should choose SafeBase or Whistic?

Choose SafeBase if the trust center should sit on Drata and the work is publishing documents plus drafting security answers, with Slack and Teams for approvals. Choose Whistic if you also assess your own vendors, want citations plus a confidence score, and can live with a small included Smart Response allowance unless you buy more in blocks of 50.

Do SafeBase and Whistic list ISO 27001, SOC 2, and US or EU hosting?

SafeBase: ISO 27001 ISO 27001 (Drata trust center), SOC 2 SOC 2 Type II (Drata trust center), US Not listed, EU Not listed, Slack Slack (SafeBase Bot), Teams Microsoft Teams, clouds GCP. Whistic: ISO 27001 ISO/IEC 27001:2022, SOC 2 SOC 2 Type II, US Yes (AWS US-West primary, AWS US-East standby), EU Not listed, Slack Slack (Trust Center sharing and assessment workflow), Teams Not listed, clouds AWS. Confirm both on the vendor sites.
